1. Cook the pasta: In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the penne pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain, reserving about 1/2 cup of pasta water. Set aside.


2. Make the vodka sauce: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.


3. Add the tomatoes: Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir. Let the sauce simmer for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to develop.


4. Incorporate the vodka: Carefully add the vodka to the sauce, stirring to combine. Let it cook for another 2-3 minutes to allow the alcohol to cook off and the sauce to thicken slightly.


5. Add the cream: Pour in the heavy cream, stirring to make a smooth, creamy sauce. Season with red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper to taste. Let the sauce simmer for 5 more minutes to allow it to thicken.


6. Combine pasta and sauce: Add the cooked pasta to the skillet and toss it with the sauce until well coated. If the sauce is too thick, you can add a little reserved pasta water to loosen it up.


7. Serve: Garnish with fresh basil and a generous sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately.
